Nova Swimmers excel at 2017 Winter National Championships

The Nova swimmers enjoyed both team and individual successes at this top level competition.

The girls 4 x 200m Freestyle relay team consisting of Polly Holden, Freya Colbert (13yrs), Mollie Wright (19yrs) and Annie Pearson (15yrs) led the way by qualifying in 3rd place for the final of this event in a comfortable time of 9.06.92. In the final the girls swam considerably faster finishing in a time of 8.24.56 to win the event and claim the Gold medals. 

 

The same girls also competed in the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay and qualified for the final in 4th position in a time of 4.03.33. The girls again improved in the final and this time finished in a time of 3.57.99 to claim 3rd place and the Bronze medals.

 

Leading the way in the individual events for Nova was the highly talented teenager Freya Colbert. At just 13yrs Freya was one of the youngest to have qualified for this National competition with the qualification times for junior swimmers aimed at swimmers aged 15yrs and under. In the 400m Individual Medley Freya finished 9th overall in the heats to qualify for the A final in a time of 5.00.63. In the final of this event Freya improved her heat time swim to finish in 10th place overall in a time of 4.59.53. This swim saw Freya secure a Silver medal for finishing as the 2nd fastest junior swimmer (15yrs and under). In the 200m Individual Medley Freya finished 15th in the heats to qualify for the B final in a time of 2.21.74. Freya again improved her time in the B final finishing in 2.20.27 to finish in 3rd place in the race and again claim a Silver medal  for finishing as the 2nd fastest junior swimmer. Freya also made the B final in the 400m Freestyle event in a time of 4.27.13. In the B final she was unable to improve her heat time and finished 9th in the final and just outside the junior medals.

Freya had an excellent Winter National Championships and in addition to the above successes also competed in 4 other events and finished 19th of 32 all age group qualifiers in the 800m Freestyle, 25th of 55 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Individual Medley, 34th of 57 all age group qualifiers in the 100m Freestyle and finally finished 35th of 62 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Freestyle. 

Molly Wright was another member of the successful relay team that also enjoyed individual success at these Championships. In the 400m Individual Medley Mollie qualified for the A final in 10th place in a time of 5.01.34. In the A final Mollie improved her heat time to finish in 8th place in a time of 4.57.63. Mollie finished 20th in the heats of the 400m Freestyle event to qualify for the B team final. In the final Mollie improved her heat time significantly finishing in 4.22.46 to finish 3rd and claim the B final Bronze medal. Mollie also finished in 16th place overall in the 800m Freestyle event in a time of 9.09.48. 

The 3rd Nova swimmer to qualify for an individual final was Joshua Harris (16yrs) and in common with the other 2 individual finalists it was the 400m Individual Medley event that Joshua excelled in. In the heats he swam a time of 4.42.11 to finish 18th and qualify for the B final. Josh was unable to improve on his time in the B final and finished in 10th place.

The other Nova swimmers that competed in the Winter National Championships were:

Ryan Wilcox (15yrs) finishing 33rd of the 61 all age group qualifiers in the 400m Individual Medley, 34th of the 52 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Individual Medley, 42nd of 61 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Breaststroke, 44th of the 47 all age group qualifiers in the 1500m Freestyle, 56th of the 69 all age group qualifiers in the 100m Breaststroke and 64th of the 67 all age group qualifiers in the 400m Freestyle,  

Joseph Kingsland (14yrs) finishing 28th of the 47 all age group qualifiers in the 1500m Freestyle, 40th of the 61 all age group qualifiers in the 400m Individual Medley, 56th of the 61 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Breaststroke and 56th of the 67 all age group qualifiers in the 400m Freestyle, 

Amy Mead (15yrs) finishing 39th of the 75 all age group qualifiers in the 50m Breaststroke, 53rd of the 54 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Individual Medley, 57th of the 57 all age group qualifiers in the 100m Breaststroke and 60th of the 62 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Freestyle.

Annie Pearson (15yrs) in addition to her success in the relay teams finished 41st of the 49 all age group qualifiers in the 400m Freestyle, 52nd of the 57 all age group qualifiers in the 100m Freestyle and 55th of 62 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Freestyle,  

Thomas White (15yrs) finished 41st of the 61 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Breaststroke, 44th of the 69 all age group qualifiers in the 100m Breaststroke and 55th of the 61 all age group qualifiers in the 400m Individual Medley. 

Dominic Bools (14yrs) finished 57th of the 61 all age group qualifiers for the 400m Individual Medley, 62nd of the 63 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Butterfly and 63rd of the 69 all age group qualifiers in the 100m Breaststroke.   

Cole Hewitt (15yrs) finished 39th of the 63 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Butterfly and 41st of the 65 all age group qualifiers in the 50m Butterfly.

Charly Neilson (18yrs) finished 37th of the 70 all age group qualifiers in the 200m Breaststroke.  

Joshua Skinner (14yrs) finished 46th of the 47 all age group qualifiers in the 1500m Freestyle.

Both Hollie-Mae Dove (14yrs) and Cira Fletcher (19yrs) qualified for the 50m Breaststroke event with Cira finishing 25th and Hollie-Mae 66th of the 75 all age group qualifiers in this event.
