Midlands Winter LC Championships 2017

The qualification times for this particular competition were challenging and so it was pleasing that 37 of the Nova swimmers qualified in one or more events. The Nottingham based Nova squad provided 29 of these entries and the Mansfield based squad the remaining 8 swimmers.  

Nova also entered relay teams in these Championships and it was the Nova Centurion Girls teams that came away with victories in both the 4 x 100m Freestyle relay and 4 x 100m Medley relay events to be crowned Winter Midland Champions. The winning Freestyle relay team consisting of Freya Colbert 13yrs, Mollie Wright 19yrs, Courtney Price 19yrs and Polly Holden 18yrs stormed to Gold in a time of 3.56.96. The winning Medley relay team saw just one change from the Freestyle relay team with Cira Fletcher 19yrs replacing Mollie Wright and they went on to win Gold in a time of 4.23.43.

All events in these Championships have Open Finals apart from the 800m and 1500m distance events which were heat declared winners. The following Nova swimmers qualified for the finals of events with some of those going on to take Regional titles or individual place medals.

Freya Colbert 13yrs took first place in the final of the Open Age 400m Individual Medley final to be crowned both overall and junior Winter Midland Champion in a Season Best time of 4.59.55. Freya also qualified for the Open Age 100m Freestyle final in a Season Best time of 59.85 and went on to finish 5th in the final in a time of 59.87.

Joseph Kingsland 14yrs was crowned junior 1500m Freestyle Winter Midland Champion after swimming a huge 16 second Personal Best time of 16.33.86.

Ben Foulston 17yrs from the Mansfield Nova squad won Gold in the multi-classification disability 50m Freestyle event in a Season Best time of 27.18. Ben also won Silver in the multi-classification 100m Freestyle event in a Season Best time of 58.94 and another Silver medal in the multi-classification disability 400m Freestyle event in a time of 4.32.99. 

Courteney Price 19yrs finished 2nd in the 200m Freestyle event to win the Silver medal in a time of 2.05.44. Courteney also qualified for the 100m Backstroke final in a Season Best time of 1.04.87 and went on to finish 3rd in the final to win a Bronze medal in a time of 1.04.88 

Mollie Wright 19yrs finished 3rd in the 400m Freestyle final to win a Bronze medal in a Season Best time of 4.23.38. Mollie also reached the final of the 200m Individual Medley and finished 5th in a time of 2.24.83.

Polly Holden 18yrs finished 3rd in the final of the 50m Freestyle event to win a Bronze medal in a Season Best time of 27.35. Polly also qualified for the 400m Freestyle final in a time of 4.24.98 and went on to finish 6th in the final of this event in a time of 4.29.32. In the 800m Freestyle event Polly swam a new Personal Best time of 9.04.06 to finish in 4th place but this time meant that she qualified for the Swim England National Winter Championships to be held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield in mid December 2017.  

Joshua Harris 16yrs finished 4th in the 200m Backstoke final in a time of 2.15.63. Joshua also qualified for the 400m Individual Medley final in a Season Best time of 4.44.10 and finished 8th in the final of this event in a time of 4.52.22. Joshua also qualified for the final of the 200m Butterfly in a time of 2.12.60 and went on to finish 8th in the final in a time of 2.14.65. 

Cira Fletcher 19yrs qualified for the 50m Breaststroke final with a new Personal Best time of 33.53 and went on to finish 4th in the final in a time of 34.14. 

Rhys Taylor 17yrs from the Mansfield Nova squad swam a new Personal Best time in the 1500m Freestyle event to finish in 6th place. 

Daniel Wilson 18yrs qualified for the 400m Individual Medley final in a time of 4.46.34 and finished 6th in the final in a time of 4.48.93.

Charly Neilson 18yrs qualified for the final of the 200m Breaststroke in a new Season Best time of 2.41.38 and finished 6th in the final in a time of 2.42.23 

Joshua Skinner 14yrs qualified for the Open Age 200m Backstroke in a heat time of 2.18.43 which was a significant new Personal Best time.  In the final Joshua finished 8th in a time of 2.23.07.  These swims did ensure Joshua won the Silver medal in the Junior category of this event.

Nova Centurion swimmers winning medals in the Junior Championships categories were Cole Hewitt 15yrs winning Silver in the 100m Butterfly and Bronze in the 200m Butterfly, Joseph Kingsland 14yrs winning Silver in the 400m Individual Medley and Thomas White 15yrs winning Bronze in 100m Breaststroke.

Hollie-Mae Dove 14yrs from the Mansfield Nova squad swam a Personal Best time of 34.96 in the 50m Breaststroke event. This secured Hollie-Mae Dove the qualification time to enter the Swim England National Winter Championships.   

The 15 Nottingham based A squad swimmers competed in 49 events with 14% of these swims being new Personal Best times and 45% being new Season Best times. The 8 Mansfield based A squad swimmers competed in 22 events with 22% of these swims being new Personal Best times and 64% being new Season Best times.

Nathan Hilton, Director of Coaching at Nova Centurion stated, "This was an excellent weekend of competition providing some tough early season racing against many of the country’s top performing athletes, following fast on the heels of our open meet it offered an excellent opportunity for many of our athletes to continue their work on their process goals and set many season best times. Our team culture is developing exceptionally well and this is starting to be reflected in our relay teams where the girls won both senior titles, our boys teams are still a work in progress with the team having many youngsters involved. Overall this was another outstanding weekend of competition at our home pool.”
